The protests were held in reaction to this arrest, and to a perceived U.S. move to remove Col. Muammar Qaddafi from power in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood. Before his death, Qaddafi had called for an “Arab Spring” in Libya, to push back against U.S. involvement in the region. The Arab Spring has been a response to America’s wars in the Middle East and North Africa, which have killed millions of Arabs and Muslims. The U.S. has long viewed Qaddafi as a dictator, and supported military coups in the 1980s and 2000s to remove him from power. Even after the ouster of Qaddafi, the United States supported the Muslim Brotherhood, which had overthrown the Egyptian government. While the U.S. and the Muslim Brotherhood disagree on many issues, including the prospect of a theocracy, both seek to repress the remaining secular governments. Many Arabs and Muslims see the U.S. and the Muslim Brotherhood as allies, and many view the Brotherhood’s overthrow of Egypt’s secular government as an American coup. In Libya, the Muslim Brotherhood sought to return to power and overthrow Qaddafi.
